Match Reports

Match Report versus Falkirk Fury -16/1/’10

Although the senior men had beaten their closest rivals, Falkirk, twice already this season, this game had added spice. Falkirk had 6’10” international centre, Ronnie Gordon, fit and available for the game; this was the first time he had played against us this season. They had also signed 6’4” shooting guard Eric Olsen, an American with the experience of playing Division 3 College basketball in America. Falkirk must have been buoyed by these additions but our senior were very focussed and led 25-15 at the end of the first quarter, helped by a 14 point contribution from Edgars Rekis.

We continued to play well in the second quarter and stretched our lead to 12 points by half time. Falkirk changed to a zone defence in the third quarter, however, and we didn’t run the offence properly opting instead for forced shots. Fury took advantage of this by winning the rebound battle and hitting us on the break; Olsen scored 9 points during this phase which saw the lead reduced to 4 points at one stage. We managed to steady the ship after this but we lost the third quarter 19-15 reducing our lead to 8 points. Falkirk didn’t manage to sustain their challenge in the third quarter and we ran out comfortable 74-63 winners.

Edgars Rekis had his most effective game for us so far, not only scoring 26 points but contesting rebounds and helping to quell the threat of the young, talented Falkirk 6’8” centre, Ali Fraser. Liam McCabe also made a huge defensive contribution too when he marked young Fraser. Simon Flockhart also had an outstanding defensive game marking Ronnie Gordon who was limited to 5 points.

This result means that Falkirk have lost 4 games to our 2 and so we have given ourselves a bit of a cushion but we will have to ensure that we approach our remaining games with the same commitment if we are to retain the league title.

Our scorers in the game were: Edgars Rekis – 26; Simon Flockhart – 13; Paddy Campbell – 11; Laurie Costello – 9; Michael Kirkpatrick – 6; Liam McCabe – 6; and Garreth Lodge – 3.

For Falkirk Eric Olsen led the scoring with 21 points; Ali Fraser – 12; Keith Bunyan – 11; Mathew Hoffman – 8; Jonny Bunyan – 6; and Ronnie Gordon – 5.
